Our Values

Acknowledgement
We acknowledge the Wurundjeri people who are the traditional custodians of the land on which our store stands. We would like to pay respect to the Elders past, present and emerging of the Kulin Nation as well as to all Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people in the wider community and beyond.

Store Values
At Maker Maker we are passionate about supporting our local Australian and New Zealand fibre industry. We are focused on stocking the highest quality products, and ensuring that we in turn support other local businesses. It is important for us to showcase the incredible range of producers, dyers and designers our industry has to offer.

We care about the Environment!
Sustainability is a huge focus at Maker Maker, which we reflect through the products we support and the day-to-day choices in our business practice. This includes only stocking natural fibre yarns, using biodegradable packing materials, emailing receipts, and re-using & recycling where possible.

Community
Our biggest goal at Maker Maker is to help you, the community, be the best Makers you can be! This is why we offer a wide variety of ways in which we can support you on your creative journey, such as our in-store pattern collection, technical support (no question is too silly!), and we stock a large range of fibre and accessory products. We aim to accommodate each and every individual.

Anti-Bullying and Discrimination Policy
Following recent discussion in the fibre community around discrimination and inclusivity, we are publishing our anti-discrimination policy, effective as of March 2019. This policy will be visible in-store, on our social media platforms, and here on our website.

Any language or behaviour that discriminates based on race, colour, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, size, physical or mental disability, social origin or technical ability will not be tolerated. This policy aligns with guidelines as per the Human Rights Commission. Staff or Patrons who fail to comply with these guidelines in-store may face expulsion from the store.

Actions
As our small business grows and our customer base grows with us, we aspire to create an intersectional and welcoming place for all. This aspiration requires a tangible action plan so that you, our customer, can see our commitment moving forward.

  • Implement and enforce the above anti-discrimination policy
  • Expand our store sample range to include more plus sized and men's garments
  • Diversify our stocked designers for patterns and samples
  • Continue to champion AUS/NZ brands that promote diversity and inclusion

These actions have been created with our core values of locality and sustainability in mind. As a small business we aim to pace these changes with the growth of the store.
